Benny’s Big Balloon Ride
00:00 / 05:11

One quiet evening, just as the sun was setting, the little town of Maplewood was getting ready for bed. The houses turned on their lights, and the streets were emptying. Everyone was winding down. Mr. Watson, the baker, was closing his shop, and you could still smell the sweet scent of fresh bread.

Next door, old Mrs. Green was watering her garden. She always hummed a tune while her cat, Whiskers, watched from the porch. Across the street, the twins, Mia and Max, were jumping on their beds, giggling loudly, even though their mom told them it was time to sleep.

“Time to rest, Mia! Max! No more jumping!” their mom called from the hallway. The twins stopped, tucked under their blankets, and whispered goodnight to each other.

But across the road, Benny was still wide awake. Benny was a little boy with curly hair and big, curious eyes. He loved to explore and imagine. He always wondered about the stars, the moon, and what the world looked like from up above.

Tonight was special. Benny had been waiting all day. In his backyard, tied to a tree, was a big, red balloon, much bigger than any balloon he had seen before. It was not just any balloon; it was a balloon big enough to carry Benny up into the sky.

Benny’s dad had spent the day filling it with air, and now it was ready. “Are you sure you’re not scared?” Benny’s dad asked as he adjusted the ropes.

“No, I’m not scared!” Benny said, his eyes sparkling. He climbed into the little basket attached to the balloon. Benny’s mom waved from the kitchen window. “Be careful, Benny!” she called out, smiling.

Benny’s dad untied the rope, and up Benny went. Slowly, gently, the big red balloon floated higher and higher. Benny looked down and saw his house getting smaller and smaller. The town looked like a little toy set. The lights were twinkling like tiny stars.

“Wow, I can see everything!” Benny said to himself. He could see Mr. Watson’s bakery, Mia and Max’s house, and even the park where he played every day. Everything was so quiet from up there, and the gentle sway of the balloon made Benny feel calm.

As Benny floated higher, he heard a soft fluttering sound. He looked up and saw a little bluebird flying next to his balloon. The bird had bright blue feathers and tiny black eyes that sparkled in the moonlight.

“Hello!” Benny said, surprised. “Where did you come from?”

“I’m Skyler,” the bird chirped. “I saw you flying and thought I’d join. Where are you going?”

“I don’t know,” Benny said, smiling. “I’m just floating and looking.”

Skyler nodded. “That’s the best way to see things. You notice so much more when you just look.”

Together, Benny and Skyler drifted quietly in the night. They passed over the dark woods where the owls hooted softly. They saw the shimmering river that looked like a silver ribbon under the moonlight. Benny felt like he was in a dream.

Then, something strange happened. Benny noticed a small light flickering on the hill near the old windmill. “What’s that?” Benny pointed.

Skyler tilted his head. “I don’t know. Let’s go see.”

The balloon drifted closer, and Benny’s heart started to beat faster. As they got near, Benny saw it was a tiny lantern hanging on a tree branch. Under the tree, a little girl was sitting, holding a book. She looked up and waved.

“Hi there!” she called out.

Benny was surprised. “What are you doing up here?”

The girl smiled. “I come here to read when I can’t sleep. My name is Lily.”

Benny waved back. “I’m Benny. I’m on a balloon ride with Skyler.”

Lily giggled. “That’s amazing! I’ve never seen anyone fly this high. Would you like to hear a story from my book?”

Benny nodded. Lily opened her book and began to read a gentle story about a kind dragon and a brave little mouse. Benny listened, feeling cozy and calm. The wind rocked the balloon like a cradle, and Benny felt his eyes getting heavy.

After the story, Benny yawned. “Thanks, Lily. That was nice.”

“You’re welcome,” Lily said softly. “I hope you have sweet dreams, Benny.”

Benny smiled and waved goodbye. Skyler helped guide the balloon back toward Benny’s house. As they floated down, Benny could see his backyard again, his mom waving, and his dad ready to catch the balloon.

“Goodnight, Benny,” Skyler chirped before flying away.

Benny’s feet touched the ground, and his dad helped him out of the basket. “That was amazing!” Benny said, but he could barely keep his eyes open.

His mom and dad tucked him into bed. “Tell us all about it tomorrow,” his mom whispered.

Benny nodded, already drifting off. “I will... goodnight,” he mumbled.

Benny fell asleep with a smile, dreaming of the big red balloon, Skyler, and the quiet, peaceful ride above his town.
