The Mystery of the Talking Tree
00:00 / 06:08

It was one of those typical Sunday afternoons when Aarav was too bored to even scroll through his phone. His friends had all disappeared into their own worlds, and his parents were busy arguing about which TV channel had the best cricket match. So, Aarav decided to take a walk to the forest behind his house, a place his dadi always warned him to stay away from.

“Woh jungle mein kuch toh ajeeb hai, Aarav. Don’t go near that tree!” she had once said. Aarav had never paid much attention to it, dismissing it as one of those grandma stories meant to keep kids inside.

But today? Today, he felt like doing something out of the ordinary. Maybe it was the fact that he had nothing better to do. Or maybe it was the daring side of him waking up. Either way, he found himself standing at the edge of the forest, staring at the old tree that had always been there, towering over everything else.

As he stepped closer, something strange happened. The air seemed to grow colder, and he could’ve sworn he heard something. Aarav blinked and looked around. “Kya yaar, I’m losing it!” he muttered to himself, shaking his head.

But then—he heard it again.

“Who goes there?”

Aarav froze.

He turned around so fast, his head almost spun. No one was there. He looked up at the old tree, a massive, gnarled thing that had been standing there for as long as anyone could remember. There was something different about it today, though. A faint glow from the moon illuminated its twisted branches, and its bark seemed to have... a face?

Aarav took a step back. "Yeh kya tha?" he whispered, his heart racing.

Suddenly, the tree spoke again.

“Don’t be scared, Aarav. I know you’ve been sneaking around behind your parents’ back again.”

Aarav blinked, completely confused. “Wha—what? How do you know my name? And what... what do you mean by ‘sneaking around’?"

The tree’s voice was low and raspy, like a grandfather telling a spooky bedtime story. “I know a lot about you, Aarav. I know about the phone you borrowed from your dad last week. The one he’s still looking for.”

Aarav's eyes widened. "What? How do you know about that?!"

The tree chuckled. “I know all the secrets, Aarav. Your secrets, your friends’ secrets, everyone’s secrets. You see, I’m not just any tree. I am the Whispering Tree, and I’ve been here for centuries, listening.”

Aarav’s head was spinning. He was used to weird stuff happening in movies, but this was real life. Was he dreaming?

“No, no way. This is impossible,” he muttered, stepping back.

The tree’s branches creaked, and the ground beneath Aarav’s feet seemed to shake slightly. “It’s very real. In fact, I’ve been listening to you for a long time, Aarav. Like when you were thinking about the secret you’ve been keeping from your best friend, Rohan.”

Aarav’s mouth dropped open. “Wait. How do you know about that?”

The tree didn’t reply. Instead, it continued in its raspy voice, “You see, Aarav, this forest is full of secrets. People come here to hide things—some big, some small. You’ve been trying to hide things, too, but I’ve heard it all. And now... you’re here.”

Aarav swallowed hard. “What do you want from me?”

“Oh, nothing much. Just a little... trade,” the tree replied, sounding almost mischievous. “If you want me to stop revealing your secrets to everyone around, I need a favor.”

Aarav wasn’t sure if he should be terrified or curious, but his mind was racing. “What kind of favor?”

“I want you to solve a riddle,” the tree said. “If you do, I’ll stop. If you don’t, well... your secrets will be known far and wide. Everyone in your town will know everything.”

Aarav’s stomach dropped. This was crazy, even by his standards. But there was no way out. The riddle would decide everything. “Okay, fine. What’s the riddle?”

The tree’s voice grew even quieter, almost as if it was preparing to reveal a deep mystery. “I stand tall, I stand alone, and I am older than you know. My leaves are few, my roots run deep, and in the night, my secrets I keep. What am I?”

Aarav thought for a moment, his mind racing. The forest, the tree, the cryptic words. Then, it clicked.

“It's you. You're the Whispering Tree, aren't you?”

The tree’s branches rustled, and it seemed to give an almost approving nod. “You’re clever, Aarav. Very clever. Yes, I am the tree. But my riddle was more than just about me. It was about understanding the hidden things—seeing what others can’t.”

Aarav exhaled, feeling a mix of relief and satisfaction. “So... if I solved your riddle, you’ll stop revealing my secrets?”

The tree’s voice softened. “Yes. But remember, Aarav, everything has its price. Secrets are powerful, but truth is more powerful. Keep that in mind.”

With that, the tree fell silent. The night air felt lighter, and the tension lifted. Aarav looked around the forest, and for the first time, he realized it wasn’t so spooky after all.

He smiled. “Well, that wasn’t so bad, right?”

As he walked back home, Aarav couldn’t help but feel a little wiser. The Whispering Tree had taught him something important: sometimes, it’s not about hiding your secrets, but understanding them.

And maybe, just maybe, he’d visit the tree again. But next time... with a better riddle to solve.

The End.
