Meena was having one of those days. You know, the kind when everything feels a little too normal. She was walking through the crowded platform at Chennai Central Station, her headphones blasting the latest Bollywood track, when she noticed something strange.
A train was pulling into the station. But…wait. It wasn’t slowing down. In fact, it was speeding up.
"Arre, what’s happening?" she muttered to herself, taking out her earbuds. The train was coming in way too fast for a regular stop. It was like the conductor had lost all control. People on the platform were starting to notice too.
"Is this a new speed challenge or something?" Meena joked to her friend Raj, who was standing next to her, eyes wide.
"Are you blind? That train is out of control!" Raj shouted, pulling her sleeve.
Meena turned around and gasped. There was no sign of the usual stop signal, no emergency brake lights flashing. It was like the train was a speeding bullet, hurtling toward the station with no plans of slowing down.
"Is the driver even awake?" Meena thought, scanning the train’s windows. The passengers inside were standing up, looking panic-stricken.
The train was now just 100 meters away, and the platform was packed. Meena’s heart started pounding, and her mind raced. She couldn’t just stand there. She had to do something.
"Okay, okay, think, Meena, think!" she muttered to herself.
Raj was in full panic mode. "Meena, we need to call the police or something!"
But Meena wasn’t listening. She wasn’t going to waste time waiting for some official to make a call. She was the one who had to act.
With no time to spare, Meena spotted a nearby lever connected to the emergency tracks. It was a risky move, but what choice did she have?
"Raj, stay back. This could be dangerous!" she shouted, running towards the lever.
Raj hesitated for a second but then nodded. "What are you even thinking?" he yelled after her. "This is a suicide mission!"
But Meena wasn’t listening. She was already halfway to the lever, dodging commuters and luggage. Her heart was racing, her thoughts jumbled. She wasn’t thinking about failure—only about saving those people.
Finally, she reached the lever. The sweat on her brow was pouring down, but she pulled it with all the strength she could muster. For a second, nothing happened. The train was still coming at full speed.
Meena froze. "No, no, no! Not now!"
Then, with a loud mechanical noise, the track began to shift. The train’s wheels screeched as it changed direction, just enough to avoid hitting the platform directly.
Meena didn’t know if it was going to be enough, but it was her only shot. She ran back to Raj, not bothering to look at the train anymore.
The train, now moving on a slightly diverted track, managed to slow down as it moved away from the crowded platform, heading toward an empty section of the station.
"Did you just… change the direction of the train?" Raj asked, his mouth hanging open.
Meena grinned, her hands shaking. "Yup, saved everyone’s life today."
But the adrenaline wasn’t over yet. The train was still moving fast, and Meena knew the passengers weren’t out of danger yet. She quickly pulled out her phone and dialed the station manager, explaining the situation.
"Listen to me carefully," she said, trying to sound as calm as possible. "There’s a runaway train headed for the junction. You need to stop it before it hits the buffer stop!"
"Who is this? A prank caller?" The voice on the other end sounded skeptical.
"No time for jokes, uncle!" Meena snapped. "This is Meena from platform 3, and I need help NOW!"
After what felt like an eternity, Meena heard the sound of sirens approaching. The station was on high alert. In a few minutes, the authorities arrived, and a team of engineers and police officers took control of the situation.
But for now, it was all Meena.
As the dust settled and the train finally stopped in a safer area, the station erupted into applause.
"Hey, that’s my sister!" Raj shouted, running to Meena and pulling her into a hug. "You saved the whole station, yaar!"
Meena laughed, still in disbelief. "I didn’t save the whole station, just… well, the passengers."
"Whatever, hero," Raj teased.
The station manager came over, his eyes wide. "You’re… you’re the one who stopped the train?"
Meena simply nodded. "Yeah, you can thank me later, uncle. Just don’t make the trains go that fast again."
The manager let out a relieved laugh. "We won’t, Meena. But you… you might just be the bravest person I’ve ever met."
"Eh, just doing my bit. Now, anyone up for a vada pav?" Meena asked, grinning.
Raj rolled his eyes. "Vada pav after saving lives? Seriously?"
"Yes. And I want extra chutney," Meena said with a wink, walking toward the nearest stall. "Heroes need their snacks, right?"
As the crowd cheered, Meena walked off, proud of what she had done, but completely at ease with herself. Because for her, every adventure was just another day’s work.
And who knew? Maybe the next time a runaway train came by, Meena would have an even bigger role to play. But for now, she had earned herself a nice, spicy treat.
The End.
