The Snoring Dragon
00:00 / 05:12

Once upon a time, in a quiet little village, everyone was ready for bed. The villagers liked to keep things peaceful. Every night, they would turn off their lamps, tuck into their warm beds, and listen to the sounds of the wind and the chirping crickets. But there was one problem.

“Rooaaarrr... Zzzzz...” came the loudest snore anyone had ever heard.

Little Emma pulled her blanket over her head. “Oh no, not again!” she whispered. “The dragon is snoring!”

The snoring came from a big, sleepy dragon who lived in a cave on top of the hill. His name was Snuffles. Snuffles wasn’t a bad dragon. He never breathed fire, never scared anyone, and loved eating berries more than anything else. But Snuffles had one big problem—he snored. And he snored so loudly that the whole village shook when he slept.

Mrs. Brown, the baker, covered her ears with pillows. “How am I supposed to bake bread in the morning with this noise?”

Mr. Green, the gardener, frowned at his sleepy cat. “Even Mittens can’t sleep!”

All the villagers were upset. They wanted to rest, but Snuffles’ snoring kept them awake. One night, the mayor called a meeting in the town square.

“What are we going to do?” the mayor asked. He looked tired. His glasses were crooked, and he yawned loudly. “We need sleep, and so does Snuffles, but this snoring has to stop!”

The villagers mumbled and scratched their heads. They didn’t want to be mean to Snuffles. After all, he was a friendly dragon. They just wanted a good night’s sleep.

Then, from the back of the crowd, a little hand shot up. It was Emma.

“I have an idea,” Emma said. Everyone turned to look at her. She was small, with curly brown hair and bright, kind eyes. She wasn’t afraid of Snuffles, not even a little.

“What’s your idea, Emma?” asked the mayor.

“Well,” Emma said, thinking hard, “maybe Snuffles just needs something cozy, like a pillow. If his head is comfy, maybe he won’t snore so much.”

The villagers nodded. That was a clever idea. No one had thought of that before. But how could they make a pillow big enough for a dragon?

“I know!” Mrs. Brown said, snapping her fingers. “We can sew a giant pillow with all our extra fabric!”

Mr. Green added, “And we can fill it with the fluffiest wool from the sheep!”

So, everyone got to work. The villagers stitched and stuffed and fluffed, working together to make the softest, biggest pillow they could. By sunset, they had finished.

Emma, carrying the pillow with some help, walked up the hill to Snuffles’ cave. She wasn’t scared. She knew Snuffles was just a sleepy dragon who needed some comfort.

“Snuffles?” Emma called out softly. She peeked inside the cave. Snuffles was curled up in a big ball, his green scales glittering in the moonlight.

“Rooaaarrr... Zzzzz...” Snuffles snored.

Emma tiptoed closer. She gently placed the pillow under Snuffles’ head. It was so soft and fluffy that Snuffles sighed in his sleep. The snoring suddenly stopped, and a gentle hum replaced it. The villagers watched from below, their eyes wide.

“It’s working!” Mrs. Brown whispered.

But just as everyone thought they would finally get some sleep, Snuffles shifted, and his snoring started again, louder than ever. The ground shook, and windows rattled. The pillow wasn’t enough. Snuffles needed more help.

Emma didn’t give up. She sat beside Snuffles and thought hard. Then, she had an idea. “Maybe he needs a bedtime story,” she said to herself.

Emma began to whisper a gentle story about clouds, stars, and quiet, peaceful forests. Snuffles’ breathing slowed, and his snoring softened to a quiet rumble.

When Emma finished, Snuffles opened one eye sleepily and smiled. “Thank you, little one,” he mumbled, shifting to a comfy spot. “I always snore when I’m scared of the dark.”

Emma looked around the cave. It was dark, with only a little light from the moon. “You don’t have to be scared, Snuffles,” she said kindly. “The moon and stars will keep you company.”

Emma hung up a small lantern in Snuffles’ cave, filling it with a warm, golden glow. Snuffles yawned, stretched his wings, and snuggled into his pillow. For the first time in forever, Snuffles slept without a single snore.

Down in the village, all was quiet. The villagers slept soundly, dreaming sweet dreams. And from then on, Snuffles never snored too loudly again, all thanks to a brave little girl who believed a bedtime story and a cozy light could make everything better.

“Goodnight, Snuffles,” Emma whispered as she headed home. And with that, the whole village slept in peace.

The End.
